Southern Maine Falls to Bowdoin in Four Sets

Huskies to Face Trinity and Simmons on Saturday

            BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Down by two sets, the visiting University of Southern Maine women's volleyball team mounted a comeback bid that fell short late in the fourth set, losing to host Bowdoin College 3-1 (25-11, 25-9, 18-25, 25-22) in a non-conference match Tuesday evening at Morrell Gymnasium.

            The win evened the Polar Bears overall mark at 2-2.  The Huskies dropped their third straight match to slip to 3-4 overall.

            Bowdoin easily won the first two sets, surrendering just 20 points, before Southern Maine took the third set.  Looking to force a decisive fifth set, the Huskies were tied with the Polar Bears, 21-21, but the hosts took four of the final five points to win the fourth set, and the match.

            Sophomore Kacey Foerster (Scarborough, Maine) led the Huskies' offense with seven kills.  Classmates Molly Mawhinney (South Portland, Maine) and Sophie Lindsay (Pasadena, Calif.) each contributed four kills.  Lindsay earned her second double-double of the season with 19 assists and 10 digs.

            Sophomore Sophia Pahl (Cedarburg, Wis.) led the Bowdoin attack with eight kills, six coming in the first set.  Classmate Cori Gray (Winter Park, Fla.) added seven kills and had seven total blocks, and sophomore Adrienne Miller (Arlington, Va.) and senior Gabby Koenig (Carlisle, Mass.) had five kills apiece.  Rookie Ella Haugen (Minneapolis, Minn.) had double-double notching 18 assists and 10 digs.  Junior Kate Kiser (Ingleside, Ill.) passed out 11 assists, and junior Emily King (Apple Valley, Minn.) had seven assists and a match-high 25 digs.

            Southern Maine hits the road on Saturday (1 p.m.) traveling to Trinity College to face the Bantams and Simmons College.  Bowdoin is back in action Friday night (6:30 p.m.) against Wellesley College at the MIT Invitational.
