GORHAM, Maine – The University of Southern Maine Huskies volleyball team swept the University of Maine Presque Isle Owls 3-0 (25-10, 25-13, 25-11) in a non-conference match at Hill Gymnasium Tuesday night.
With the win, the Huskies improve to 7-11 overall. The Owls drop to 0-6 with the loss.
Four USM players totaled five or more kills, and the team combined to serve 19 aces to push past UMPI. Junior outside hitter Madalyn Terry (Kennebunkport, Maine/Kennebunk) finished with a team-high seven aces, and sophomore defensive specialist Nicole Hansen (Biddeford, Maine) had five aces to go along with five digs. Freshman setter Bridget Burns (Warrenville, Ill/Wheaton Warrenville South) tallied four aces, 20 assists, and five digs, and freshman libero Demi Ruder (Clifton, Colo./Central) finished with three aces.
Freshman middle blocker and co-captain Kelsey Abramson led USM in kills with six. Senior middle blocker Krista Keene (Gorham, Maine), Terry, and junior outside hitter Annie Mitchell (Gorham, Maine) each tallied five kills, and Mitchell also contributed five digs.
Sophomore outside hitter Elizabeth Kofstad (Presque Isle, Maine) led the Owls with seven kills. Sophomore setter Randi Kaplan (Embden, Maine) finished with 10 digs and three assists, and senior setter Allison MacDonald (Antigonish, Nova Scotia) chipped in with eight digs, two assists, and one ace.
Southern Maine returns to action when they travel to Wellesley, Mass. to take on Babson College in a non-conference match Thursday (7:00 p.m.).
