GORHAM, Maine – Senior Cara Radino (Franklin, N.J./Wallkill Valley) was 3-for-5 at the plate with four RBI and three runs scored over two games to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies softball team to a non-conference doubleheader sweep of the UMaine Presque Isle Owls Sunday afternoon at Towers Field in Gorham, Maine.

            With the pair of wins, Southern Maine extends its winning streak to three games and improves to 4-21 on the season.  The pair of losses makes it five straight for the Owls who fall to 3-17.

            Radino was 2-for-3 in the Huskies' 17-1 win in the opener.  Radino used her speed on the basepath to leg out a three-run in-the-park home run with a strong shot into the right field corner as part of a six-run second inning for the Huskies.  Radino added an RBI double in the third as the Huskies' pounded out 11 hits in the first game.  Senior Jessica Hayden (Madison, Maine) was 2-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored. Hayden hit her first home run of the season clearing the scoreboard in left field in the third. Sophomore Lillian Cooper (Lamoine, Maine/Ellsworth) and freshman Nicole Nutter (Westbrook, Maine) each had a pair of RBI for the Huskies. 

            USM senior Stefanie Stockwell (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) earned the win allowing just one earned run on one hit and a walk over four innings.  She struck out six batters.  Junior Krista Coffin (Presque Isle, Maine) took the loss for the Owls.  Coffin allowed four earned runs on 11 hits and six walks over four innings.  Coffin was hampered by eight UMPI errors.

            In the second game, senior Jesse Hutchins (Sebago, Maine/Lake Region) earned her second straight win for the Huskies.  Hutchins held the Owls to just one earned run on four hits and did not give up a walk over seven innings.  She struck out four. 

            Leading 2-1 through three and a half innings, USM broke open the game with a three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-1 lead.  USM took advantage of four walks and an RBI single from freshman Morgan Scavetta (Damariscotta, Maine) and an RBI ground out from Stockwell to plate its three runs.

            With the 5-2 lead, Hutchins continued to pitch strong for the Huskies over the final three innings and USM added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI ground out from Nutter for the win.

            Nutter led USM with two RBI, while senior Katie Davis (Woburn, Mass.) was 1-for-2 with an RBI double in the first inning. 

            UMPI freshman Amanda Allen (Limestone, Maine) took the loss allowing five earned runs on three hits and six walks over six innings.  Freshman Ashley Laking (Topsfield, Maine) had a pair of hits for the Owls, while senior Kellie Peers (Caswell, Maine) had an RBI.

            Southern Maine returns to action at Plymouth State University on Tuesday (3:30 p.m.) for a Little East Conference doubleheader.  UMaine Presque Isle travels to Wheelock College on Thursday (3:00 p.m.).
