GORHAM, Maine -- The Little East Conference today announced that University of Southern Maine senior Kevin Desmond (Monmouth, Maine/Monmouth Academy) and freshman Ron Helderman (Madison, Maine) are recipients of weekly honors for their performances at the New England Division III Championships this past weekend.

Desmond was picked as the Track Athlete of the Week for the first time this winter, and the fourth time on his career, and Helderman was selected as the Rookie Field Athlete of the Week for the fifth time this season.

Competing at the New England Division III Championships held at Springfield College, Desmond won the 800 meters and anchored the Huskies' winning 4 x 400 meter relay.  Desmond bested a field of 17 other competitors with his season-best time of 1 minute, 54.20 seconds.  Desmond's time moved him up to 15th in the latest national rankings.

The relay quartet of junior Zach Miller (Rochester, N.H./Spaulding), sophomore Roger Charest (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little), senior Conor Sullivan (Scarborough, Maine) and Desmond took the top spot on the podium with its combined time of 3:24.14.

Helderman continued his impressive rookie campaign finishing second in pole vault by clearing 4.35 meters (14-3 ¼).

M.I.T. took home the team championship scoring 129 points.  Bates College was runner-up with 73, followed by Williams College with 71, Southern Maine with 67 and Bridgewater State University with 55.  USM's fourth-place finish surpassed the program's previous best of fifth place accomplished in 2010, 2012 and 2013.

The Huskies will send qualified competitors to the NEICAAA New England Championships at Boston University next Friday and Saturday.
