UMaine Farmington Defeats Southern Maine 2-1

 

GORHAM, Maine  –  Aric Belanger had a goal and an assist to lead the UMaine Farmington Beavers to a 2-1 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference men's soccer game Wednesday night at Hannaford Field.

With the win, UMF improves to 5-7 overall, stopping a three-game losing skid.  The Beavers are now 4-1 on the road this season.  Southern Maine dips to 0-10-3 with the loss. 

ON THE PITCH: 

             Despite early pressure from the Huskies, who registered the first three shots of the game, UMaine Farmington took the early lead scoring in the 17th minute. Belanger tapped in his second goal of the game receiving a square ball across the box to the far post. Belanger's goal stood through the first half. 

            USM continued to apply pressure, controlling the ball in its offensive third in the second half; however, the Beavers went ahead 2-0 in the 64th minute.  This time Belanger slotted a ball to the left side of the box finding a wide open Hunter Michaud for his first goal of the season. 

            Southern Maine rallied to cut its deficit to a lone goal, 2-1, in the 88th minute on a beautiful header from sophomore Zekariya Shaib (Portland, Maine) off of a service from senior Sam Anderson (Middletown, Conn.) to the near post.  

            The Huskies continued to press in the closing minutes and had several close calls, but Beaver goalkeeper Jonah Sautter make key plays down the stretch for the win. 

THE GOALKEEPERS: 

Facing seven shots on goal, Sautter made six saves for UMF in the win.  Earning his first collegiate start freshman Alec Witham (Penobscot, Maine/George Stevens) made several key defensive plays coming off his line to stop potential attacks while making a save in the loss. 

INSIDE THE STATS: 

USM outshot the Beavers 15-8 in the contest, putting seven shots on target.  The Huskies also had a 12-1 lead in corner kicks.  UMaine Farmington did not earn its first corner kick of the game until midway through the second half.  

NEXT GAME:  

            Southern Maine hosts UMass Dartmouth on Saturday (2:30 pm) at Hannaford Field in a Little East Conference match up. .
