Western Connecticut Shuts Out Southern Maine

 

GORHAM, Maine  –  Afa Reyes scored two goals as six different players scored for the Western Connecticut State University Colonials en route to a 7-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference men's soccer game Saturday afternoon at the Western Athletic Center.

Extending its win-streak to seven games, Western Connecticut improves to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in the Little East.  Southern Maine falls to 0-6-2 with the loss and 0-1 in the LEC.

ON THE PITCH:

            Scoring twice in the opening five minutes of the game on goals from Franz Muhaj and Reyes in the fourth and fifth minute, Western Connecticut went on to lead 5-0 at the half. Reyes scored both of his goals in the first half to pace WCSU.

            In the second half Spencer Ranno and Robert Sam scored in the 55th and 75th to close out the Colonials scoring.

INSIDE THE STATS:

Western outshot USM 29-5, but both teams were even with four corner kicks a piece.  Thirteen of the Colonials' shots were on target.

THE GOALKEEPERS:

Both teams used three goalkeepers each.   For the Huskies, Cameron Atherton took the loss playing the first half, allowing five goals and making four saves.  Alec Witham played 19:07 making a pair of saves and allowing a goal, while Dalton Cassidy played 25:03 allowing a goal.

Daniel Szabo earned the win making three saves for the Colonials in 65:13 of action.  Matthew D'Onofiro played 10:33 and did not face a shot, while Justin Figueiredo played 14:14 and did not face a shot.

NEXT GAME: 

            The Huskies travel to Bowdoin College for a non-conference game on Wednesday (4:00 pm).
