Southern Maine Falls to UMass Boston 13-7

GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore Conor Lenfest (Waltham, Mass.) scored a game-high five goals and dished off three assists to lead the visiting University of Massachusetts Boston Beacons to a 13-7 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in Little East Conference men's lacrosse action Tuesday evening on Senior Day at Hannaford Field.

The win snapped a three-game losing skid for the Beacons and kept their playoff hopes alive.  The Beacons improved to 3-13 overall and 2-5 in conference play.  The Huskies had their three-game win streak stopped by the loss and fall to 6-7 overall and 3-4 in LEC games.

Lenfest was a major factor in the opening quarter scoring twice and dishing off an assist in the final 2:15 of play as the Beacons broke out of a 2-2 tie to take a 5-2 lead after 15 minutes.  Lenfest opened the scoring early in the second quarter giving him a hand in four consecutive Beacon goals resulting in a 6-2 lead for the visitors.

UMB maintained a three or four-goal lead through the remainder of the second quarter and the entire third quarter as the game settled into a defensive battle.

Down 8-4 to start the fourth quarter, the Huskies got some life on goals from senior Jake Schoenberg (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat) and sophomore Steve Gilbert (Litchfield, Maine/Oak Hill) to pull within two.

Lenfest responded for the Beacons igniting a run of five consecutive UMB goals with his fourth and fifth goals of the night.  Sophomore Jack O'Brien (East Longmeadow, Mass.) tallied the final two goals in the run.

For the Beacons, freshman Darragh Fahey (Walpole, Mass.) finished the night with two goals and one assist, and junior Derek Caruso (Port Washington, N.Y.) added two goals.  Senior goalie Cameron Dixson (Wayland, Mass.) had a huge game stopping 19 shots.

Junior Tristan Dundas (Abbotsford, B.C.) led Southern Maine with two goals.  Schoenberg, junior Bryce Randall (Portland, Maine/Deering) and sophomore Joe Cullinan (Contoocook, N.H.) each had a goal and one assist.  Sophomore goalie Griffin Hanson (Dover, N.H.) recorded 13 saves.

Prior to the start of Tuesday's game, the Huskies recognized their three departing seniors: Schoenberg, co-captain Paul Leonardo (Groton, Mass./Groton-Dunstable) and Sam Hornblower (Portland, Maine/Deering).

Southern Maine closes the regular season on Friday (6 p.m.) hosting league leader Keene State College.  UMass Boston concludes the regular season at home on Friday (7 p.m.) entertaining Western Connecticut State University.
