D'Aloisio Stops 39 Shots for the Huskies
NORTHFIELD, Vt. -- Senior goalie Tom Aubrun (Chamonix, France) stopped 19 shots and rookie Braedyn Aubin's (Woodstock, Ontario) unassisted first-period goal proved to be enough as the second-ranked Norwich University Cadets held off the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies 1-0 in New England Hockey Conference men's action Saturday at Kreitzberg Arena.
The win was the third straight for the reigning NEHC champions, and gave Cadets a clean sweep of New England College and USM on the opening weekend of NEHC play. The Huskies dropped both ends of their weekend road trip to Vermont by one goal, falling Friday night at Castleton University in overtime, 4-3, to start the campaign at 0-2.
Southern Maine received standout goaltending from junior Anthony D'Aloisio (Frisco, Texas) to stay within striking distance of the Cadets. D'Aloisio stopped 39 of 40 shots he faced before being lifted in the final 1:45 for the extra attacker.
With the shutout, Aubrun stretched his string of consecutive minutes without allowing a goal to 180. The senior has posted three straight shutouts to open the season, and now has 10 career shutouts.
Aubin's unassisted goal at 16:10 of the opening period was the first of his collegiate career. Aubin intercepted a clearing attempt and fired a shot in that D'Aloisio got a piece of, but could not control, for the only score.
Southern Maine returns home to play its home opener next Friday (7 p.m.) against Babson College. Norwich travels to sixth-ranked Hobart College next Friday (7 p.m.) for the first of two games this season between last year's two NEHC finalists.
