Roberts 28 points, 10 rebounds Double-Double Paces USM to Win at Castleton 81-67

 

GORHAM, Maine  –  Senior Jaire Roberts (Warrenton, Va./Fauguier) scored 28 points and had 10 rebounds to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a solid 81-67 win over the Castleton University Spartans in a Little East Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Glenbrook Gymnasium.  

         With the win, Southern Maine moves to 6-8 overall and earns its first win in Little East Conference action to stand at 1-5 overall.  Castleton falls to 1-13 with the loss and 0-5 in conference action. 

         Notching his second consecutive double-double and fifth straight game reaching double-digits in rebounds, Roberts was one of three Huskies in double figures scoring.  Shooting 10-for-15 from the field, including an 8-for-13 performance from three-point range, Roberts helped USM shoot 44.6 percent (29-for-65) from the field and 40.9 percent (18-for-44) from three-point range. Sophomore Jacobe Thomas (Houston, Texas/Davis) added 15 points, three rebounds and three assists while senior Keenan Hendricks (Owls Head, Maine/Oceanside) had 13 points and seven assists.  

         Remy Brown led Castleton with 14 points and nine rebounds, while Amadou Diakite had 13 points.  Demauriaye Smith had a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with six points, and Nate Plaisted had nine points and five assists. 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • USM led wire-to-wire scoring the first points of the game, a three from Roberts, and never trailing. Up 6-4 with 17:13 to play, the Huskies outscored Castleton 17-8 over the next eight minutes to open up a 23-12 lead capped by a three from junior DJ Anderson (Houston, Texas/Davis). 
  • Castleton pulled to within six, 32-26, late in the opening half on a jumper from Smith with 1:57 to go, but neither team scored in the final minutes as USM took the lead into the break. Roberts and Matt Sherburne each had a blocked shot to help the Huskies defensively in the end. 
  • Castleton continued its surge in the second half and were within a possession 33-30 after two free throws from Smith but USM responded with a 15-2 run to lead 48-32 with 13:46 to play.  Haney capped the run with a three.  
  • After the Haney three, USM never led by less than 13 points the rest of the way and led by as many as 20 points in the half for the win.
