GORHAM, Maine – Seniors Dorina Sirois (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) and Maggie Redman (Alfred, Maine/Massabesic) each scored a goal to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 2-1 win over the Castleton University Spartans in a Litle East Conference field hockey game Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.
The win is the fourth straight for the Huskies who improve to 12-8 overall and 10-2 in the Little East Conference. Castleton had its four-game win streak snapped and concludes its regular season with a record of 11-7 and 8-4 in the LEC. Both teams have qualified for the upcoming Little East Conference tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
In a evenly played first half, Southern Maine held a slight 6-4 advantage in shots, but neither team was able to score a goal in the opening 30 minutes. Sirois had one defender to beat in the seventh minute for the Huskies' best chance of the first half, but Castleton goalkeeper senior Tashia Pashby-Rockwood (Williston, Vermont/Champlain Valley) smartly came off her line to disrupt the play.
Sirois capitalized on her next opportunity however scoring a remarkable goal in the 35th minute. Connecting with the ball in mid-air, Sirois struck for goal with an back-handed, over-the-shoulder, far-post shot to the top corner of the cage for her team-leading 10th goal of the season and a 1-0 USM lead.
The Huskies' lead held until the final 20 seconds of the third quarter. With the Spartans pressuring offensively and earning three third-quarter penalty corners, junior Allison Lowell (Brandon, Vermont/Otter Valley) pulled her team even 44:40 into the game, cleaning up a loose ball for her 10th goal of the season.
The score remained unchanged late into the fourth quarter until Redman notched the game-winner in the 57th minute, following a Husky penalty corner. After inserting the ball to teammate senior Abbie Staples (Alfred, Maine/Massabesic), Redman posted up inside the circle and was able to get a stick on a direct pass in front of the cage from Staples for her ninth goal of the season. The assist was Staples' fourth of the season.
Sophomore goalkeeper Lindsay Pych (West Milford, N.J./Morristown-Beard) made three saves to earn the win for the Huskies. Pashby-Rockwood (turned in an outstanding performance making four strong saves for the Spartans.
Southern Maine will host a playoff game on Tuesday (TBA). USM finished the 2019 LEC regular season in a three-way tie for second place at 10-2 with Keene State and Western Connecticut. After the LEC tie-breaking procedure, the Huskies earn the fourth seed and will again face Castleton University. Castleton is the fifth seed. Worcester State earned the regular season championship with a record of 11-1 in conference action.
