BRIDGEWATER, Mass.  –  Sophomore Samantha Ellis (New Vineyard, Maine/Mt. Blue) and senior Maggie Redman (Alfred, Maine/Massabesic) each scored to goals to propel the University of Southern Maine to a 4-1 win over the Bridgewater State University Bears in a Little East Conference field hockey game Saturday afternoon at Swenson Field. 

The win is the second straight for the Huskies who are now 4-1 in Little East Conference play, and 6-6 overall.  Bridgewater State drops to 1-8 overall and 1-4 in the LEC. 


            Scoreless for most of the first quarter, Ellis slapped in a goal out of the air off of the stick of senior Dorina Sirois (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) with just 54 seconds left in the opening frame for a 1-0 Huskies' lead. 

            USM took a 2-0 advantage in the 28th minute when Redman notched the first of her two goals in the game. With Redman and Ellis scoring late in each quarter the Huskies took their two goal lead into th halftime break. 

            Bridgewater State made it 2-1 midway through the third quarter as Jacquelyn Legendre completed the assists from Katie Stewart in the 38th minute, but USM scored twice in the fourth quarter for the 4-1 final. 

            Redman scored the second of her two goals in the game in the 50th minute with another unassisted tally, while Ellis and Sirois connected again in the closing seconds of the game. 


            Southern Maine sophomore goalkeeper Lindsay Pych (West Milford, N.J./Morristown-Beard) made two save in the victory for Southern Maine.  BSU goalkeeper Jillian Delaney made seven saves in the loss.  


USM dominated the stat sheet outshooting the Bears 18-5, and holding an 11-3 lead in penalty corners. 

Sirois' two assists give her three for the 2019 season and 11 for her career.  She is now tied for 15th in USM career records for assists.  The senior captain has 17 goals and 11 assists for 45 points for USM, which is 20th overall. 

Ellis' two goals puts her at six on the season, and 17 in her career.  Ellis has 17 goals and nine assists through 33 games in her career for 43 points.  Her 17 goals are tied for 22nd all time, while her 43 points are also tied for 22nd all time. 


Southern Maine remains on the road and travels to Worcester State on Wednesday (7:00 pm) for a Little East Conference game.
