GORHAM, Maine – Freshman Desiree Wante (Poland, Maine) collected a rebound in the circle and found the back of the cage late in the second quarter and the Thomas College Terriers got enough out of their defense to earn an 1-0 shutout win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference field hockey game Sunday afternoon at Hannaford Field.
With the win, Thomas snaps a two-game losing streak and evens out its record at 2-2. The Terriers are now 1-1 on the road. Suffering its third consecutive loss, Southern Maine stands at 2-4 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Following an initial save from USM sophomore Lindsay Pych (West Milford, N.J./Morristown-Beard), Thomas' Wante was able to take control of loose ball to notch her second goal of the 2019 season knocking in the eventual game-winner in the 25th minute. The goal is Wante's first game-winner of her career.
Southern Maine had a few solid chances for an equalizer in the fourth quarter, including an attempt from senior Dorina Sirois (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) in the 57th minute after an insertion from classmate Maggie Redman (Alfred, Maine/Massabesic) but it was high of the goal.
INSIDE THE STATS:
Both teams were fairly even statistically with USM leading Thomas in shots 9-8; however, the Terriers had six on frame compared to four for the Huskies. TC had an 8-3 lead in penalty corners. USM had two of its penalty corners in the fourth quarter.
USM junior Julia Nicol (Augusta, Maine/Cony) earned the first defensive save of her career stopping a near-goal early in the first quarter with a diving effort.
Pych made four saves in the loss for Southern Maine. Thomas goalkeeper MacKenzie Oberholzer (Hancock, Md./Greencastle-Antrim) made four saves to earn the shutout.
In just the sixth meeting between the two schools, the series record is 4-2 in favor of Thomas College. The Terriers have won the last four contests dating back to the 2016 season. .
Southern Maine remains at home on Hannaford Field and will test itself against ninth-ranked Bowdoin College on Tuesday (4:00 pm)
