GORHAM, Maine –  Sophomore Samantha Ellis (New Vineyard, Maine/Mt. Blue) and senior Abbie Staples (Alfred, Maine/Massabesic) each found the back of the net to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 2-0 win over the UMaine Farmington Beavers in a non-conference field hockey game Wednesday night at Hannaford Field.

Earning its second straight win after a season-opening set-back, Southern Maine improves to 2-1 on the season.  UMaine Farmington dropped its third straight contest and is 0-3.

Ellis used her speed in the circle to score her second goal of the season putting the Huskies ahead 1-0 unassisted midway through the first quarter.  In an evenly played half, Southern Maine carried its one-goal advantage through half time as both teams registered three shots a piece after two quarters of action.

Outshooting USM 3-1 in the third, UMF nearly pulled even with the Huskies at the end of the quarter after a pair of attempts from freshman Emily Toman (Lincoln, Maine/Mattanawcook Academy), but the Toman's near-goal at the end of the quarter was waived off by an official.

USM applied more pressure in the fourth, and had a pair of shots cleared off the line by UMF sophomore Lydia Wasina (Waterboro, Maine/Massabesic) for defensive saves before Staples gave the Huskies a much-needed insurance goal in the 53rd minute.  Staples scored on one of the Huskies' two penalty corners in the fourth, receiving a flat ball from sophomore Mikayla Bourassa (West Gardiner, Maine/Gardiner) before taking a long-range shot for the goal.

Sophomore Lindsay Pych (West Milford, N.J./Morristown-Beard) earned the shutout win for Southern Maine making five saves. Sophomore Grace DiMarco (Uxbridge, Mass.) and freshman Katelyn Rouleau (Freeport, Maine) split the game evenly. Rouleau made five saves and allowed the fourth quarter goal, while DiMarco did not register a save and allowed the first quarter goal.

Southern Maine hosts Husson on Saturday (1:00 pm) in its next contest.
