#15 Southern Maine Downs WUSTL 5-1 in 10 Innings

AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- The 15th-ranked University of Southern Maine baseball team scored four times in the top of the 10th inning to take a 5-1 victory over Washington University in St. Louis (WUSTL) Tuesday morning in a non-conference game at Lake Myrtle Park.

The win gets the Huskies back to .500 at 2-2.  The Bears, playing their third Top 25 team in the last four days, slips to 6-5.

Held in check over the first nine innings by WUSTL's rookie right-handers Rees Viersen (Atlanta, Ga.) and Jared Fong (Austin, Texas), the Huskies took advantage of the Bears' bullpen in the 10th inning to bat around.

Junior Kip Richard (Kennebunk, Maine) led off the 10th with a single off sophomore Jack Besser (Montclair, N.J.), and classmate Zach Quintal (Eliot, Maine/Marshwood) walked to end Besser's stint on the hill.  Junior Jake Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) greeted rookie reliever Ty Dalinghaus (Leawood, Kan.) for a single to load the bases for USM rookie Sam Troiano (South Portland, Maine).  Troiano, the Little East Conference Rookie of the Week, walked to force in the go-ahead run.

Sophomore Daniel Broadie (New York, N.Y.) came on for the Bears looking to put out the fire, but USM junior Tanner Laberge (Windham, Maine) singled to left field delivering Quintal and Dexter with a pair of insurance runs.  After a one-out walk to junior Devin Warren (Smithfield, Maine/Messalonskee) reloaded the bases, sophomore Andrew Olszak (Danvers, Mass.) knocked in Troiano with a sacrifice fly to right field.

WUSTL took a 1-0 lead in the first inning against USM sophomore starter Ryan Worthington (Narragansett, R.I.) on a two-out RBI single from sophomore Thomas Gardner (Houston, Texas).  Worthington got out of the jam and settled down to pitch into the seventh inning.

Olszak reached on an infield error to lead off the sixth and came around on back-to-back singles from sophomore Dylan Hapworth (Winslow, Maine) and Richard.  Fong, who came on after Olszak reached, got out of further trouble getting the next three batters.

Both sides had opportunities to win in regulation, but Fong and Dexter, who came on in relief with two outs in the eighth, snuffed out those chances.

Dexter picked up his first win of the season going the final 2.1 innings allowing one hit and striking out one.  Worthington went six-plus innings allowing one run on five hits and two walks while fanning two.  Viersen, making his first start, went five-plus for the Bears allowing an unearned run on three hits.  He struck out 10.  Fong hurled four scoreless innings giving up six hits and one walk and struck out four.  Besser was tagged with his first loss of the season.

Dexter helped the Huskies' offense getting three hits.  Richard and sophomore Anthony Degifico (South Portland, Maine) had two hits apiece.  Gardner and senior Auggie Mense (St. Louis, Mo.) each had a pair of singles for the Bears.

Southern Maine will play Mt. St. Joseph on Wednesday (4:45 p.m.) at Lake Myrtle Park.  WUSTL will take on Salve Regina University in the final game of their five-game Florida swing on Wednesday (9:45 a.m.).
