Junior left-hander Logan Carman spun a three-hitter for his first career shutout as USM blanked Daniel Webster College 5-0 in the NCAA Regional Tournament.

HARWICH, Mass. -- Junior left-hander Logan Carman (Newfields, N.H./Laurel Springs [Calif.]) spun a three-hitter en route to his first career shutout as the top-seeded University of Southern Maine Huskies opened play in the 2013 NCAA New England Regional Tournament by blanking the eighth-seeded Daniel Webster College Eagles, 5-0, at Whitehouse Field.

With the victory, the Huskies advance to Game Seven of the eight-team, double-elimination tournament and will face fourth-seeded Western New England University on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.  WNEU moved into Game Seven after posting a 5-2 win over fifth-seeded M.I.T. in the opening game of the tournament.

The Huskies extended their current winning streak to six games and raised their overall record to 38-7.  The 38 wins is one shy of the school record of 39 wins set by the 1997 team.

Daniel Webster, champions of the New England Collegiate Conference, falls to 28-11 on the season.  DWC will play M.I.T. in an elimination game Thursday morning.

Carman was masterful throughout the game.  He did not allow a hit until the fifth inning when the Eagles got back-to-back singles from seniors Tyler Bonin (Litchfield, N.H./Campbell) and Rich Lizotte (West Warwick, R.I.) to open the inning.  Carman got the next batter on a strikeout, but threw a wild pitch to advance the runners to second and third.  Carman induced an infield popout for the second out before hitting senior Joe Morin (Pelham, N.H.) with a pitch to load the bases.  The southpaw got out of the jam getting senior Josh Chasse (Haverhill, Mass.) to line out to right field.

Carman retired the Eagles in order in the sixth and seventh innings.  The Eagles mounted a two-out threat in the eighth when Chasse walked and senior Darrik Marstaller (Spofford, N.H./Keene) singled, but Carman got the final out on a fly ball to right field.  Carman set the Eagles down in order in the ninth to secure his 11th win of the season; tying the USM single-season record for wins set by Robert Aceto in 1991.  Carman had five strikeouts in the game.

DWC senior starter Greg Dubela (Stratham, N.H./Exeter), who came into the game sporting an 8-0 record and a 1.39 ERA, matched Carman over the first three innings permitting only one hit.  The Huskies managed a run in the fourth inning when junior Forrest Chadwick (Gardiner, Maine) singled with one out, advanced to second on a ground out, and scored on classmate Chris Bernard's (Scarborough, Maine) RBI single.

Dubela set the Huskies down in order in the fifth and sixth innings before giving up two runs in both the seventh and eighth innings.  In the seventh, Chadwick singled to lead off the inning.  After two fly ball outs, Chadwick stole second.  He scored when junior John Carey (South Portland, Maine) doubled down the right field line.  Carey would move to third on a passed ball and score on a single by junior Matt Verrier (Norway, Maine/Oxford Hills).

USM added two more insurance runs in the eighth when senior Tucker White (Deerfield, N.H./Coe-Brown Northwood) slammed a two-run homer.  The home run was the 10th of the season, and the 22nd of his career, for Tucker.

For the Huskies, freshman Sam Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) and Chadwick had two hits apiece.

GAME NOTES: John Carey became the third player this season, and 36th all-time, to reach 100 career RBI when he doubled in Forrest Chadwick in the seventh inning  ...  Carey joins Anthony Pisani and Forrest Chadwick as the newest members of the 100-RBI club  ...  With today's win, Logan Carman moved into a tie with Jason Jensen (1995-97) for ninth place on the all-time career wins list.  Carman and Jensen each have 18 wins  ...  The Huskies' win was their first in NCAA tournament play since beating Husson University, 5-4 in 10 innings, on May 13, 2009.  The Huskies had dropped their last four tournament games  ...  Carman's shutout was the first by a USM pitcher in NCAA tournament play since Adam Ross shut out Western New England College in the 2008 regional.
