Husky Athletics: Quick Facts

Athletics is an important and exciting part of student life at the University of Southern Maine. Whether you're a participant or a spectator, USM teams provide plenty of fun and action for everyone involved.

USM sponsors 22 intercollegiate sports; 11 for women, and 11 for men. The fall sports lineup includes men's and women's cross country, field hockey, golf, men's and women's soccer, women's tennis, and volleyball. During the winter season, USM offers seven sports: men's and women's basketball, men's and women's ice hockey, men's and women's indoor track and field, and wrestling. In the spring, student-athletes can choose to participate in baseball, men's and women's lacrosse, softball, men's tennis, and men's and women's outdoor track and field. A variety of club and intramural sports is also offered.

USM Athletics has admission fees for men's and women's basketball, and men's and women's ice hockey games during the regular season. Admission is $5, $3 for seniors and free for students with a valid ID. Children under 12 are free.  During the post-season (Little East Conference, NCAA) admission fees may be charged for other sports and will be determined by the governing body.

The Student-Athlete Experience

As an NCAA Division III member institution, Huskies’ athletics places the highest priority on the overall quality of the educational experience and on the successful completion of all students’ academic programs. USM Athletics seeks  to establish and maintain an environment in which a student-athlete’s athletics activities are conducted as an integral part of the student-athlete’s educational experience. USM Athletics achieves this through the five key developmental areas: Academic Achievement, Athletic Performance, Personal Development, Career Development and Service to Community.

USM student-athletes succeed in the classroom and in competition as evidenced by the numerous academic honors earned by its student-athletes each year, most recently highlighted by two-time Elite 90 recipient and 2017 first team Academic All-American Daniel Del Gallo (wrestling), and 2017 Academic All-American Mary Caron (softball) . Each year USM Athletics recognizes its student-athletes who have achieve a 3.0 GPA or higher with its annual William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete. A record 184 student-athletes achieved this honor for the 2015-2016 academic year.

A History of Success

Ten different Huskies varsity teams and many individual performers have participated in national championship competitions, highlighted by Huskies baseball teams that captured National Championship honors in 1991 and 1997. In addition, the women's basketball team holds the NCAA Division III record for the longest streak of consecutive 20-win seasons (30) and has competed in the NCAA Final Four five times, men’s track and field athlete Jamie Ruginski completed his career as a four-time National Champion, wrestler Dan Del Gallo captured a national championship in 2017, and track and field standout Peyton Dostie was the 2015 NCAA Division III National Champion Pentathlete.

A majority of the Huskies compete in the Little East Conference, recognized as one of the most competitive Division III conferences in the nation. In addition, golf competes as a member of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference, men’s and women’s ice hockey competes in the New England Hockey Conference, and wrestling participates in the Pilgrim Wrestling League.
