Sirois Leads USM at NCAA Regional Championship

            BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine women's cross country team's 2018 season came to a close Saturday at the annual NCAA Division III New England Regional Championship hosted at Bowdoin College.

            Sophomore Sydney Sirois (Greene, Maine/St. Dominic) paced the Huskies' effort finishing in 122nd place overall, covering the 6,000-meter (3.73 miles) course in a time of 24 minutes, 12.73 seconds.  Sirois improved upon her 2017 regional performance by 104 places, and was nearly 47 seconds quicker.

            Senior Haley Bantz (East Waterboro, Maine/Massabesic) was the second USM runner to cross the line finishing in 150th place overall (149 in team scoring) with a time of 24:33.37.

            Completing USM's five scoring runners were senior Kelly Lynch (Harpswell, Maine/Mt. Ararat) in 247th place (245th) with a time of 26:00.76, sophomore Samantha Thompson (Westbrook, Maine) in 263rd place (261st) after crossing the line in 26:26.08, and freshman Emily Colby (Lunenburg, Vt.) in 309th place (301st) at 27:24.39.

            The Huskies five scoring runners posted a score of 1,078 points to finish 37th among the 57 teams posting a score.  M.I.T. won the meet with a score of 87, and Middlebury College was runner-up with 108 points.  Both schools will advance to next week's NCAA Division III National Championship field.

            Rounding out the top five teams, and hoping for an at-large berth into the national championship field, were Williams College (115), Brandeis University (136) and Tufts University (159).

            Sophomore Kaitlyn Mooney of the Coast Guard Academy was the individual champion with her time of 20:43.74.
