Southern Maine Drops Matches to Western Conn and Colby
GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine women 's volleyball team dropped a pair of hard-fought matches Saturday afternoon at the Warren Hill Gymnasium. The Huskies dropped a Little East Conference match to Western Connecticut State University 3-1 (28-26, 17-25, 28-26, 26-24) and a non-conference contest to Colby College 3-0 (27-25, 25-21, 25-23).
With the two losses, the Huskies drop to 14-11 overall and 3-4 in Little East play. Western Connecticut also defeated Colby 3-1 (22-25, 25-19, 25-11, 25-18) to extend its winning streak to four and run its record to 15-9 overall and 3-3 in conference play. Colby snapping a five-match losing skid with its win over USM and finished the day at 6-13 overall.
Against WestConn, sophomore Kacey Foerster (Scarborough, Maine) pounded down 18 kills on a .350 attack percentage (18-4-40). Junior Megan Gettings (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) added nine kills, and rookie Alexis Dow (Miami, Fla./Saint Brendan) had eight. Senior setter Nicole Schmitz (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham) passed out 28 assists to go along with six kills and seven digs. Junior Jenna Graves (Corinth, Texas/Lake Dallas) had a team-high 14 digs.
The Colonials were led offensively by senior Kamari King (East Hartford, Conn.) who had a game-high 22 kills and 10 digs for a double-double. Sophomore Nicolina Chenard (Ardsley, N.Y.) added 10 kills, and senior Mikayla Aubry (Fresno, Calif./Bullard) and junior Alyssa Dam (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Spackenkill) had nine apiece. Senior Jenna Skerritt (Wolcott, Conn.) passed out 43 assists and had 14 digs for a double-double. Senior libero Jenna Pisano (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) led all players with 15 digs.
In the match against Colby, Foerster and Dow led the Huskies with eight kills apiece. Schmitz had 17 assists, and rookie Sophie Lindsay (Sierra Madre, Calif.) dished out 13 assists. Sophomore Lauren Delissio (Hebron, Conn./RHAM) had 15 digs along the back row.
Colby was led by senior Paige Hanssen (Earlysville, Va.) who had 16 kills. Rookie Natalie Simonton (Scarborough, Maine) reached double figures with 10 kills. Senior setter Molly Manuel (Andover, Mass.) orchestrated the offense passing out 32 assists. Senior libero Erin Maidman (Ventura, Calif.) lead all players with 19 digs.
Southern Maine will play its final regular-season home match on Thursday (7 p.m.) hosting Rivier College, then close the season at Eastern Connecticut State University on Saturday (12 p.m.). Western Connecticut will host LEC rival Rhode Island College on Tuesday (7 p.m.). Colby travels to Maine Maritime Academy for a non-conference game on Tuesday (7 p.m.).
