Schmitz Earns Third Double-Double of the Season
BANGOR, Maine -- Senior Nicole Schmitz (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham) posted her third double-double of the season and sophomore Kacey Foerster (Scarborough, Maine) had a season-high 14 kills as the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the Husson University Eagles 3-1 (25-22, 25-15, 21-25, 25-19) in a non-conference volleyball match Wednesday evening at Newman Gymnasium.
The win extended the Huskies' winning streak to four, and improved their overall record to 7-4. The Eagles dropped their third straight match sliding to 1-7 overall.
Schmitz dished out 21 assists and had 12 digs for her double-double, in addition to having four kills and two service aces. Foerster, in her first season with the Huskies' program, knocked down 14 kills in 36 attacks.
Junior Kylee Austin (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) had four kills, two aces and four blocks. Sophomore Jamie Jannarone (Windham, Maine) contributed eight kills, and junior Megan Gettings (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) had six kills. Sophomore Rachel Chillé (Yarmouth, Maine) shared the team lead with Schmitz in digs with 12, and junior Jenna Graves (Corinth, Texas/Lake Dallas) had 11 digs.
Senior Kate Woods (Charlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill) and junior Mary Grace Power (Bellerose Village, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) paced the Eagles' offense with seven kills apiece. Junior Riley Mooers (Mount Desert Island, Maine/MDI) added six kills, and sophomore Kayli Doten (Calais, Maine) contributed five. Junior Hanna Hembrow (Milford, N.H.) distributed 27 assists and had 14 digs for a double-double. Woods and rookie Adrienne Beatty (Rochester, N.H./Spaulding) led all players with 16 digs.
Southern Maine is back in action on Saturday (12 p.m.) hosting Castleton University and the University of Maine at Presque Isle for a tri-match. Husson hosts Curry College for a non-conference match on Saturday (2 p.m.).
