Southern Maine Splits Tri-Match at WPI

            WORCESTER, Mass. -- The University of Southern Maine women's volleyball team rebounded from an opening-match loss to host WPI to take a straight-sets win over Fitchburg State University Saturday afternoon in a tri-match at Harrington Auditorium.  The Huskies fell to WPI 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-13), then came back to the court to knock off Fitchburg State 3-0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-11).

            The split left the Huskies at .500 on the season with a 3-3 record.  WPI defeated Fitchburg State 3-0 in the final match of the day to extend its season-opening undefeated streak to 6-0.  With the two setbacks, Fitchburg State falls to 1-5 on the season.

            Against WPI, sophomore Kacey Foerster (Scarborough, Maine) paced the Huskies' attack with nine kills.  Junior co-captain Kylee Austin (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) added five kills.  Senior setter Nicole Schmitz (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham) earned a double-double with 16 assists and 10 digs.  Sophomore Rachel Chillé (Yarmouth, Maine) lead all players with 17 digs.

            The Engineers had a solid match attacking for a .279 percentage.  Sophomore Kate Amrein (Nashua, N.H./Nashua North) had 12 kills on 28 attacks, and classmate Sarah Kwatinetz (Seattle, Wash./Garfield) had 10 kills without an error on 20 attacks.  Senior Azita Bakhtyari (Andover, Mass.) dished out 20 assists, and rookie Lilly Taylor (Weymouth, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) had 13 assists.

            Returning to the court to take on Fitchburg State, it was the Huskies who had the solid attacking match hitting for a .247 percentage.  Six Huskies had four or more kills in the match led by Foerster with eight and Schmitz with seven.  Schmitz also passed out 18 assists and had four service aces and nine digs.  Foerster also had a match-high 17 digs.

            For the Falcons, junior Emily Beauvais (Haverhill, Mass./Winchendon School) had a team-high three kills, and sophomore Amy Coelho (Bellingham, Mass.) had five assists.  Sophomore Jessica Peirce (Brentwood, N.H./Exeter) was credited with 15 digs and senior Nicole Sylvester (Everett, Mass.) had 10 digs.

            Southern Maine returns to the court on Tuesday (7 p.m.) hosting Bates College at the Costello Sports Complex.
