Southern Maine Finishes Third at ERAU Spike's Classic
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Sophomore Briana Pina (Cumberland, R.I.) won the hammer throw as the University of Southern Maine women's outdoor track and field team finished third among the 25 teams competing at the two-day ERAU (Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University) Spike's Classic.
Southern Maine scored 71 points to finish third behind host Embry-Riddle and Bethune-Cookman University. Embry-Riddle won the event with 107 points, and Bethune-Cookman was runner-up with 94 points.
On Friday, Pina took the hammer throw with a mark of 37.75 meters (123-10) to lead a 1-3-4-5 finish by the Huskies. Sophomores Ashley Belanger (Biddeford, Maine) and Melissa Bell (Portland, Maine/Deering) and junior Sabrina Sodders (Alstead, N.H./Fall Mountain) took the third through fifth scoring positions as the Huskies picked up 25 points. Belanger had a mark of 35.66 meters (117-0), followed by Bell with a throw of 35.11 meters (115-2) and Sodders with a spot of 33.94 meters (111-4).
Belanger and Sodders also scored in the shot put. Belanger had a best throw of 12.46 meters (40-10 ½) to finish second, and Sodders was eighth with a mark of 11.37 meters (37-3 ¾). Bell also picked up points for the Huskies in the discus with throw of 33.13 meters (108-8) to place seventh.
Sophomore Molly Gibeault (Brooklyn, Conn./Woodstock Academy) finished third in the pole vault clearing 3.20 meters (10-6). Rookie Rachel Ingram (Winthrop, Maine) had a fifth-place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 10.67 meters (35-0 ¼). Junior Natasha Wallace (Pittsfield, Maine/MCI) picked up a fourth-place finish in the javelin with a throw of 32.87 meters (107-10)
On the track, junior Brooke Davis (Clarendon, Vt./Mill River Union) was runner-up in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with her time of 12 minutes, 12.67 seconds. Davis' time met the qualifying standard for the New England Division III Championships in May.
Senior Anna Whitaker (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) ran to a sixth-place finish in the 800 meters with her time of 2:25.61.
The Huskies return from their spring break Florida trip to compete next Saturday at the Brown University Invitational.
