Huskies Open Outdoor Campaign at North Florida Spring Break Invitational
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The University of Southern Maine women's outdoor track and field team opened its 2015 season competing at the University of North Florida Spring Break Invitational on Friday. The meet was a non-team scoring event.
Sophomore Ashley Belanger (Biddeford, Maine), competing in her first outdoor meet after missing the 2014 outdoor campaign, posted a seventh-place finish in the shot put with her mark of 12.58 meters (41-3 ¼). Belanger's throw was just three centimeters (1.25 inches) shy of the school record and qualified her for the New England Division III Championships, the NEICAAA New England Championships and the ECAC Division III Championships meets in May.
Junior Sabrina Sodders (Alstead, N.H./Fall Mountain) qualified for the NE Division III and ECAC Division III meets in the shot put with her career best throw of 11.87 meters (38-11 ½).
Sophomore Molly Gibeault (Brooklyn, Conn./Woodstock Academy) earned an NE Division III qualifying mark in the pole vault by clearing 3.20 meters (10-6) to tie for 13th place.
On the track, senior Anna Whitaker (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) met the NE Division III qualifiying standard in the 400 meters with her time of 1:00.86.
The Huskies will remain in Florida during their spring break to train before competing next Friday (April 3) at the ERAU (Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University) Spike's Classic in Daytona Beach, Fla.
