Damron Named LEC Rookie Track Athlete of the Week

GORHAM, Maine -- For the second straight week, and the third time this spring, the Little East Conference has selected University of Southern Maine sophomore Hannah Damron (Windham, Maine) as its women's outdoor track and field Rookie Track Athlete of the Week.

Damron was selected this week in recognition of her record-setting performance at the New England Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships.  Damron broke the school record in the 800 meters with her fourth-place finishing time of two minutes, 15.66 seconds.  Damron broke the previous record time of 2:16.75 set by Molly Carl in April 2011.

Damron was also part of the Huskies' record-setting 4x400-meter relay team that finished third with their combined time of 3:58.33.  Damron combined with sophomore Nicole Kirk (Scarborough, Maine) and juniors Anna Whitaker (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) and Peyton Dostie (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle) to break the previous record time of 3:58.54 set in 2013.

The Huskies scored 22 points to place 14th among the 33 teams scoring at the meet.  M.I.T. won the team title scoring 132 points.  Williams College was runner-up with 85 points, followed by Tufts University with 50, Middlebury College with 47 and Bates College with 45.

Southern Maine will send qualified competitors to the New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association (NEICAAA) Championships at Westfield (Mass.) State University this Friday and Saturday.
