Huskies Open Outdoor Season at Bridgewater State
BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The University of Southern Maine women's track and field team opened its 2014 outdoor season Saturday competing in the BSU Bear Invitational held at Swenson Field on the campus of Bridgewater State University.
Sophomore Sabrina Sodders (Alstead, N.H./Fall Mountain) and freshman Natasha Wallace (Pittsfield, Maine/MCI) highlighted the Huskies efforts meeting New England Division III Championships qualifying standards in the shot put and javelin, respectively. Sodders met the shot put standard with her fourth-place mark of 11.11 meters (36-5 ½) while Wallace met the javelin standard with her throw of 33.17 meters (108-10) that put her fifth in the final results.
Freshman Briana Pina (Cumberland, R.I.) posted the Huskies' best finish placing second in the hammer throw with a mark of 39.98 meters (131-2). Pina was just two centimeters shy of the N.E. Division meet qualifying standard.
On the track, junior Catie Keenan (York, Maine) and Tayla Robbins (Raymond, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 10,000 meters. Keenan posted a time of 42:24.83 with Robbins next at 42:59.81.
The Huskies head to Florida on their annual spring training trip next week and will compete at the University of Central Florida Invitational next Saturday.
