GORHAM, Maine -- The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced this week that the University of Southern Maine is among the 148 institutions to receive its 2013 Division III All-Academic Track & Field team honor.
In addition, the USTFCCCA announced that three members of the team - senior Molly Carl (York, Maine), freshman Nicole Kirk (Scarborough, Maine) and sophomore Anna Whitaker (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) - were among the 363 student-athletes representing 123 schools to receive individual All-Academic honors. This is the third consecutive year that Carl has earned the distinction.
To receive the All-Academic team honor, a team must have a cumulative team grade point average (GPA) of 3.10 or higher. The 26 USM student-athletes combined for a cumulative team GPA of 3.16.
Carl, Kirk and Whitaker earned the All-Academic individual distinction by compiling a 3.30 or higher cumulative GPA and meeting either of the following athletic standards: a student-athlete must have competed at the NCAA Indoor or Outdoor Championship, or finished the regular season ranked among the national top 35 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 25 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list.
Kirk and Whitaker were members of the Huskies' 4 x 400-meter indoor relay team that was ranked 20th in the nation (3:57.17). Kirk also was ranked 26th indoors at 400 meters (58.40). Carl finished the outdoor season ranked 32nd in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:13.04).
