Kirk Sets 400-Meter Record; Huskies Fourth at MIT Invitational
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Freshman Nicole Kirk (Scarborough, Maine) set the school record in the 400 meters Saturday to highlight the University of Southern Maine women's outdoor track and field team's performance at the M.I.T. Invitational held at the Henry G. Steinbrenner Track.
Host M.I.T. won the five-team meet with 239 points. Colby College edged Bates College, 158.50-158, for second. USM compiled 81.5 points with Husson University rounding out the field with 38.
Kirk covered 400 meters in a time of 57.78 seconds to finish second in the event and break the previous school record time of 58.05 set by Emily Artesani in May 2008. Kirk also had a second-place finish in the 200 meters crossing the line in 25.82 seconds.
Sophomore Peyton Dostie (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle) had the Huskies' one first-place finish on the track taking the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 1:04.76. Dostie was third in the high jump clearing 1.46 meters (4-9 ½) and second in the long jump with a leap of 5.15 meters (16-10 ¾).
Sophomore Anna Whitaker (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) earned two scoring results on the track placing fourth in the 400 with a time of 1:00.90 and seventh in the 200 flashing across the line in 27.42. Senior Molly Carl (York, Maine) and junior Morgan Beede (Augusta, Maine/Cony) finished fifth and sixth in the 5,000 meters with times of 18:18.05 and 18:18.27, respectively.
USM's 4 x 400-meter relay quartet of Kirk, sophomore Emily Panciera (Monson, Maine/Foxcroft Academy), Whitaker and Dostie placed second with its school record time of 3:59.25. They broke the previous record of 4:01.88 set in May 2010.
In the field events, senior Jennifer Durham (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) and freshman Sabrina Sodders (Alstead, N.H./Fall Mountain) scored in two events. Durham won the discus with a throw of 39.12 meters (128-4) and was eighth in the hammer throw with a mark of 36.69 meters (120-4). Sodders placed fourth in the shot put with a throw of 10.56 meters (34-7 ¾) and seventh in the discus with a mark of 29.63 meters (97-2).
Southern Maine will compete next Friday and Saturday (April 19-20) at the Aloha Relays being held at Bowdoin College.
