USM Opens Outdoor Season at North Florida

            GORHAM, Maine -- University of Southern Maine senior Molly Carl (York, Maine) made her return to competition Saturday a notable one winning the steeplechase at the North Florida Invitational as the Huskies opened their 2013 outdoor season.  The meet was a non-team scoring event held at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida.

            Carl, who missed the entire indoor campaign with an injury, covered the 3,000-meter steeplechase distance in an approximate time of 11 minutes, 50 seconds.  Her time qualified her for the New England Division III and ECAC Division III Championships in May.

            In other competition Saturday, freshman Nicole Kirk (Scarborough, Maine) turned in a times of 25.85 seconds in the 200 meters and 58.31 in the 400.  Sophomore Emily Panciera (Monson, Maine/Foxcroft Academy) turned in a personal best time of 2:22.46, and senior Brooke Madden (Dedham, Maine/Brewer) crossed the line in 2:30.44, in the 800.  Kirk made the qualifying standards for the NE D3, NEIcAAA and ECAC meets.  Panciera met the standard for the NE D3 meet.

            Junior Morgan Beede (Augusta, Maine/Cony) and senior Katherine McWilliams (Nashville, Tenn./Middle College HS) posted solid performances in the 5,000 meters with times of 19:18.71 and 19:20.40 respectively.

            Senior Jennifer Durham (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) posted marks of 11.33 meters (37-2 ¼) in the shot put, 38.96 meters (127-10) in the discus and 36.21 meters (118-9) in the hammer throw.  Durham qualified for the NE D3 meet in the shot put and discus, and the NEIcAAA and ECAC meets in the discus.

            Southern Maine will travel to the University of Massachusetts Lowell next Saturday to compete in the George Davis Invitational.
