GORHAM, Maine -- University of Southern Maine junior Molly Carl (York, Maine) is among the ten women's track and field/cross country student-athletes named today to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District ® One first team for NCAA Division III schools as selected by the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

To be nominated by their institution's sports information director, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.00 scale) and be of sophomore standing academically and athletically at the nominating institution.  CoSIDA's Division III District One region includes institutions from Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont.

Carl had a banner year for the Huskies.  In the fall season, she became USM's second cross country All-American when she finished 27th at the NCAA Division III National Championship.  Carl also earned All-Little East Conference honors placing second at the conference championship meet, and was the third USM runner to win the individual title at the State of Maine Championship.  In February, she was named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country Team.

In the winter indoor season, the LEC coaches selected Carl as the Track Athlete of the Year.  A four-time recipient of the weekly Track Athlete of the Week award, Carl won conference titles in the mile and 3,000 meters.  She also won the mile at the state championships, earned Division III All-New England accolades in the mile, and was a participant in the mile at the NCAA Division III Championships.

Carl continued adding to her impressive resume this spring earning her second All-American honor finishing sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the recent NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships.  She was the LEC champion in the mile, and also earned All-LEC honors in the 800 meters.  Prior to going to the NCAA meet, Carl earned Division III All-New England (steeplechase) and All-ECAC (1500 meters) honors.

Over the course of the 2011-12 academic year, Carl set three indoor school records (mile, 3,000 meters and 5,000 meters) and one outdoor record (steeplechase).  In all, she now holds six school records.

            A geography/anthropology major, Carl has a 3.79 cumulative GPA.

First team Academic All-District ® honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America ® Team ballot where first-, second- and third-team Academic All-America ® honorees will be selected.
