GORHAM, Maine -- The Little East Conference announced Monday afternoon that University of Southern Maine freshman Hannah Wiley (Arundel, Maine/Thornton Academy) has been named the women's outdoor track and field Rookie Field Athlete of the Week in recognition of her outstanding performance this past weekend at the New England Division III Championships.
Wiley posted a pair of top-three finishes at the championships. She set the school record in the long jump with a leap of 5.69 meters (18-8) to place second overall. She also finished third in the triple jump with a program-best mark of 11.55 meters (37-10 3/4). Wiley is currently ranked 16th on the NCAA Division III performance list in the long jump and 26th in the triple jump.
On the track, Wiley also won the 400-meter hurdles with a school record time of one minute, 1.17 seconds. Wiley's time moved her into second place for the event on the latest NCAA Division III performance list.
This is the fourth time this spring that the LEC has recognized Wiley. She was previously recognized as the Rookie of the Week three times.
Sparked by Wiley's performance, the Huskies garnered 50 points to finish fifth among the 29 teams that scored in the meet. Williams College took the team title with 157 points, followed by host M.I.T. in second with 124. Tufts University was third with 81 followed by Worcester State University with 60 and USM.
Wiley and her qualified teammates will participate in the New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association (NEIcAAA) Championships this Friday and Saturday. The meet is being held at M.I.T.
