GORHAM, Maine -- Two members of the University of Southern Maine women's outdoor track and field team, junior Bethany Dumas (Augusta, Maine/Cony) and sophomore Molly Carl (York, Maine) have been selected for weekly accolades by the Little East Conference in recognition of their performances last weekend at the annual conference championships meet. The conference office made the announcement Monday afternoon.
Dumas was named the Field Athlete of the Week for the second time this spring while Carl was tabbed as the Rookie Track Athlete of the Week for the fourth time.
At the Little East Conference and New England Alliance Championships, Dumas won two field events, one track event and was part of the Huskies' winning 4 x 100-meter relay team. She won the pole vault for the third straight year by clearing a conference-meet record 3.56 meters (11-8) to surpass the NCAA provisional qualifying standard (3.55 meters), and repeated as the champion in the javelin with a throw of 41.37 meters (135-9). Dumas is now provisionally qualified for the NCAA championships in both events.
On the track, Dumas won the 100-meter hurdles with personal best time of 15.74 seconds in the finals, and ran third leg of the Huskies' winning 4 x 100-meter relay (51.13).
Carl won the 800 meters with her time of 2:17.31, and was second in the 1500 meters with a school record and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 4:37.41. She broke the previous record set by Gabby Cyr in May 2008 by nearly six seconds.
The Huskies will send qualified athletes, including Dumas and Carl, to the New England Division III Championships this Friday and Saturday. The meet will be held at M.I.T.
