GORHAM, Maine -- The Little East Conference announced today that two members of the University of Southern Maine women's outdoor track and field team, senior Hillary Hall (Waldoboro, Maine/Medomak Valley) and freshman Morgan Beede (Augusta, Maine/Cony), have been chosen for weekly awards in recognition of their outstanding performances at the Colby College Invitational this past weekend.
Hall was named the Field Athlete of the Week, and Beede was tabbed as the Rookie Track Athlete of the Week. This is the first weekly award of the outdoor season for each. During the recent indoor season, Hall and Beede each received the same award on one occasion.
At the Colby Invitational, Hall set a school record in the high jump by clearing the bar at 1.63 meters (5 feet, 4 1/4 inches) en route to a second-place finish in the event. Hall's mark was a career best, indoors or outdoors, and improved her New England Division III and ECAC Division III qualifying standing. She broke the previous record of 1.62 meters (5-4) set by Caitlin Handcock in March 2006. Hall also placed third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time 16.6 seconds.
Competing in the 5,000 meters, Beede came across the finish line first with a career best time of 18:50.52. That time qualifies Beede for next month's New England Division III Championships, and moved her into seventh place on the Huskies all-time list.
Host Colby College won the meet with 279.50 points, followed by Bates College with 223.50 and Southern Maine with 211.
Southern Maine will be in competition this Friday and Saturday at the Aloha Relays hosted by Bowdoin College.
