Baird, Carl Receive LEC Weekly Recognition

GORHAM, Maine -- The Little East Conference announced today that two members of the University of Southern Maine women's outdoor track and field team, senior Vanessa Baird (Dover-Foxcroft, Maine/Foxcroft Academy) and sophomore Molly Carl (York, Maine), have been selected for weekly recognition.

Baird was named the Field Athlete of the Week while for the second straight week Carl was picked as the Rookie Track Athlete of the Week.  This was the LEC's second weekly report for the outdoor season.

Competing at the Bryant University Invitational, Baird posted New England Division III Championships qualifying marks in the discus and the hammer throw.  In the discus, she placed eighth overall with a throw of 32.59 meters (106-11).  In the hammer throw, she was 13th with a mark of 40.39 meters (132-6).  Baird also had an 11th-place finish in the shot put with a toss of 10.83 meters (35-6).

Running in the 1500 meters, Carl turned in the second best time in school history crossing the line in 4 minutes, 46.54 seconds en route to an eight-place finish.  Her time qualified her for the N.E. Division III and ECAC Division III Championships.  She also ran the anchor leg of the Huskies 4 x 400-meter relay that finished seventh (4:18.64).

The Huskies will travel to Lowell, Mass., this weekend to compete in the George Davis Invitational hosted by the University of Massachusetts Lowell.
