GORHAM, Maine -- The Little East Conference today announced that two members of the University of Southern Maine women's outdoor track and field team, junior Bethany Dumas (Augusta, Maine/Cony) and sophomore Molly Carl (York, Maine), have been selected for weekly honors in recognition of their outstanding performances last weekend at the Florida State Relays.
Dumas was named the Field Athlete of the Week for the sixth time in her stellar career while Carl was chosen as the Rookie Track Athlete of the Week. This was the LEC's first weekly report for the outdoor season.
Competing in her first outdoor meet of the spring season, Dumas posted an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the javelin and a top-six finish in the pole vault. In the javelin, Dumas earned a second-place finish with a throw of 41.54 meters (136 feet, 3 inches) on her final attempt. In the pole vault, Dumas cleared 3.50 meters (11-5 3/4) to finish in sixth place.
On the track, Dumas competed in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing 10th with her time of 1 minute, 6.18 seconds. She qualified for the New England Division III, NEICAAA (Open New England) and ECAC Division III Championships in all three events.
Carl finished fifth in the 800 meters en route to setting a school record. Carl crossed the finish line in a time of 2:17.14 seconds, breaking the old mark set by Dianna Thibaudeau in April 2006 by 1.16 seconds. Her time qualified her for the New England Division III and ECAC Division III Championships. The next day, Carl also posted a New England Division III Championships qualifying time in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles with her 14th-place time of 1:08.31.
The Huskies will travel to Northampton, Mass., this Saturday (11:00 a.m.) for the Smith College Invitational.
