Kalilwa, Bantz Win Events at Maine State Open
GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore Adela Kalilwa (Lewiston, Maine) and junior Haley Bantz (East Waterboro, Maine/Massabesic) won individual events Saturday to highlight the University of Southern Maine women's track and field team's performance at the Maine State Open meet held this weekend at the Costello Sports Complex field house. The meet was a non-team-scoring event.
Kalilwa took the top spot in the long jump with a mark of 5.31 meters (17-5 ¼), while Bantz was the winner of the high jump clearing 1.53 meters (5-0 ¼). Kalilwa also had a runner-up finish in the triple jump with her mark of 11.29 meters (37-0 ½).
Earning runner-up finishes for USM were sophomore Allison Pickering (Orono, Maine) in the pole vault (3.35m/10-11 ¾), senior Neka Dias (San Antonio, Texas/Holmes) in the 55-meter hurdles (8.39 seconds), and sophomore Jhanel Potts (Boston, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) set a school record in the 55-meter dash (7.35). Potts eclipsed the previous record (7.40) set by Nicole Kirk in Janaury 2016.
Freshman Edie Christian (Scarborough, Maine) and sophomore Samantha Round (Veazie, Maine/Orono) combined with Pickering to give USM a 2-3-4 finish in the pole vault. Christian finished third (2.90m/9-6 ¼) with Round clearing a career-best height (2.75m/9-0 ¼) to take fourth.
Southern Maine will have selected competitors competing tomorrow at the Boston University Last Chance meet.
