Southern Maine Rolls Fitchburg State 3-1

GORHAM, Maine –  Three different players scored as the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the Fitchburg State University Falcons 3-1 in a non-conference women's soccer game Wednesday afternoon at Hannaford Field.

With the win, Southern Maine improves its record to 3-11 overall. Fitchburg State drops its second consecutive game to stand at 4-11 on the season.

Freshman Carlee Long (Green, Maine/Leavitt) broke open a scoreless game midway through the first half cleaning up a rebounded save for her first intercollegiate goal.  After the initial shot put on frame from junior Olivia Mull (Portland, Maine/Cheverus) was saved and deflected to the far post, Long's run was rewarded as she collected the loose ball and drove it home in the 29th minute.

Southern Maine junior Sarah Michaud (Candia, N.H./Manchester Central) doubled the Huskies advantage in the 34th minute to give her team a 2-0 lead heading into the break.  Collected a loose ball roughly 30 yards from the goal, Michaud took a touch forward before launching in a long-range shot that passed through the hand of the Fitchburg State goalkeeper.

After the halftime break, USM wasted little time making it 3-0, scoring its final goal of the game in the 49th minute.  Freshman Sarah McLaughin (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) scored her second goal of the season, collecting a loose ball in front of the box and sending in a strike to the near post.

Fitchburg State broke up the shutout late in regulation when sophomore Brittny Peralta (Leominster, Mass./St. Bernard's) redirected a cross from freshman Haleigh Medlin (Baldwinville, Mass./Monty Tech) in the 81st minute.  It was the only goal the Falcons would muster however for the 3-1 final in favor of Southern Maine.

USM junior goalkeeper Taylor Canastra (Fairhaven, Mass.) made five saves in the win as USM held a slim 12-10 advantage in shots.  FSU sophomore Natalie Arsenault (Ashburnham, Mass./Monty Tech) made four saves.

Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (3:00 p.m.) against UMass Dartmouth in a Little East Conference action. Fitchburg State hosts Westfield State in a MASCAC contest on Saturday (12:00 p.m.).
