GORHAM, Maine - Junior Rachel Berkowsky (Stoughton, Mass.) tallied a second-half hat trick and the Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies 8-0 in a Little East Conference women's soccer game, Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.
With the win, Eastern Connecticut remains in sole possession of first place in the Little East Conference standings at 5-0-1 and improves its overall record to 10-3-2. The Warriors have won two straight and are 3-1-2 in the month of October, and have won all three games via the shut out, surrendering just three goals in six games. Southern Maine is 5-11 overall and 0-5 in the Little East.
Eastern Connecticut grabbed a commanding 4-0 lead in the first half. Junior Michele D'Agata (West Suffield, Conn.) put the Warriors on the board early, launching a hooking shot from 30 yards out in the seventh minute. After the D'Agata goal, ECSU tacked on three more for its 4-0 lead at the break. Junior Maggie Bodington (Stratford, Conn.), senior Hailey Lehning (Woodbury, Conn./Nonnewaug) and sophomore Kaley Pratt (Milford, Mass.) each scored in the 16th, 22nd and 36th minutes respectively.
Lehning scored her second goal of the game in the 57th minute with an unassisted strike to the upper-90 of the far post to make it 5-0 before Berkowsky came off the bench to tally a hat trick scoring three goals in a five-minute span in the 85th, 88th and 90th minute. Berkowsky was able to make her presence felt in the game with solid on-the-ball work down the right side of the field.
ECSU sophomore Kayla Labrecque (Westhampton, Mass./Hampshire Regional) and junior Kaley Kennedy (Enfield, Conn./Enrico Fermi) combined for the win. Labrecque made one save in 45 minutes, while Kennedy closed out the game making one save as well. Sophomore Taylor Canastra (Fairhaven, Mass.) made five saves and allowed four goals in the first half before leaving the game. Sophomore Olivia Mull (Portland, Maine/Cheverus) replaced Canastra in goal for the second half, Making 16 saves in her goalkeeping debut.
Southern Maine travels to Pine Manor on Tuesday (3:00 p.m.) for a non-conference game. Eastern Connecticut travels to Simmons on Wednesday (7:00 p.m.) for a non-conference match up.
