BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Tri-captain Jessica Meader (SR/Scarborough, Maine) scored a goal in each half to help lead the University of New England women's soccer team to a 5-0 triumph over the University of Southern Maine in a non-conference match played Tuesday afternoon (Oct. 11) at Barbara J. Hazard Field.
The Nor'easters improved to 8-3-1 with the win, while USM dropped to 4-9-0. The victory was UNE's ninth consecutive positive decision over the Huskies.
UNE received all the scoring it would need for victory just 2:27 into the contest when Meader put home a low shot from the top of the box after receiving a feed from Becca Murphy (JR/Durham, N.H.). Anna Michaud (SR/Hampden, Maine) had won a ball at midfield to help get the play started.
The Nor'easters doubled their lead just over five minutes later on a long shot just inside the right goal post by Devon Wolfenden (SR/East Longmeadow, Mass.). Brionne Turcotte (SR/Goffstown, N.H.) had an assist.
The lead would improve to 3-0 in the 28th minute on a beautiful header by Turcotte off a corner kick service by Edie Pallozzi (JR/Windham, Maine).
UNE poured it on with second-half goals by Meader (52nd minute) and Murphy (58th minute). Meader's marker was set-up by Wolfenden and Murphy, while Murphy's goal was unassisted.
The Nor'easters dominated the match, establishing insurmountable margins in shots (29-3) and corner kicks (14-0). Brielle Robinson (SR/Monson, Mass.) and Emily Ashman (SO/Madison, Conn.) each played a half in goal to combine for the shutout.
Taylor Canastra (SO/Fairhaven, Mass.) stopped 12 shots for the Huskies, who play a Little East Conference match Saturday at UMass Dartmouth (1 p.m.).
UNE will host Nichols College on Senior Day at Hazard Field Saturday. The Commonwealth Coast Conference tilt is slated to start at 3:30 p.m.
