With the win, Southern Maine improves to 3-2 overall, and earns just its second win over Salem State in the 25-game series between the two schools. Salem State drops to 0-5.
Michaud beat Salem State sophomore goalkeeper Amanda Backe (Danvers, Mass.) up high with a well-struck ball after receiving an outstanding cross from freshman Adela Kalilwa (Lewiston, Maine). Kalilwa played an excellent game for the Huskies off of the bench, creating several scoring opportunities, before offering up the assist on Michaud's game-winner.
With both teams registering just three shots in the opening half, the game seemed poised to enter the break at 0-0. However, Southern Maine senior Analies Ross-Dyjak (Orono, Maine) put the Huskies ahead 1-0 with just six seconds left in the first, notching her second goal of the season off of a hustle play in the box. Kalilwa carried the ball down the right side of the field and passed the ball off an on-rushing junior Jessica Preble (Milo, Maine/Penquis Valley). Backe came off of her line to break up the scoring threat but Ross-Dyjack hustled her way to a loose ball in the box and hit a hard shot passed an outstretched Backe for the goal.
Salem State broke up the shut out in the 60th minute as Junior Allison Celia (Hopkinton, Mass.) sent a hard shot to the far post for her first goal of the season. Celia received a square ball in the box after an outstanding individual effort from freshman Katie Brown (Milford, Mass.). Brown carried the ball down the right side before cutting the ball in, creating space between herself and her defender, and dropped the ball off to her right to a wide-open Celia for the score.
Backe finished with two saves in the loss, while Huskies' sophomore Taylor Canastra (Fairhaven, Mass.) made six saves in the win. Southern Maine held an 11-9 lead in shots, but only had four on goal. Salem State led 5-2 in corner kicks for the game.
Southern Maine opens its Little East Conference schedule for its next contest and will travel to Rhode Island College on Saturday (1:00 p.m.). Salem State hosts Westfield State on Saturday (1 p.m.) in a MASCAC game.
