Western Connecticut Shuts Out Southern Maine 4-0
GORHAM, Maine – Senior Kelsey Chacho (Plainville, Conn.) scored the game-winning goal less than two minutes into the game to lead the Western Connecticut State University Colonials to a 4-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference women's soccer game Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.
The win is the fourth straight for the Colonials who improve to 12-5-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the Little East Conference. Southern Maine drops its ninth straight contest to fall to 3-12 overall and 0-6 in the Little East.
Chacho quickly put the Colonials up 1-0 just 1:37 into the game carrying the ball down the near side of the field and then cutting it back for a far-post shot to score her seventh goal of the season. Western Connecticut took a 2-0 lead heading into the half benefiting from an unlucky bounce in the box resulting in a Huskies' own goal in the 33rd meaning.
The Huskies defense held strong through the opening 30 minutes of the second half, before the Colonials struck for two more goals in the final 15 minutes of play for the 4-0 final. Entering the game as a sub, freshman Allison Oakley (Beekman, N.Y./Arlington) made the most of her time scoring a goal in the 76th minute, tapping in a flat ball played across the goal-mouth on an assist from junior Emily Newhard (Wallingford, Conn./Lyman Hall). Five minutes later, Oakley found Newhard with a through ball into the box for the Colonials' fourth and final goal of the game.
Western Connecticut goalkeeper sophomore Jillian Fernandez (Columbia, Conn./Windham) earned the shut out making a pair of saves. USM senior Marissa Temple (Grafton, Mass.) made 11 saves in the loss.
Southern Maine heads to Husson University on Wednesday (7:00 p.m.) in a non-conference game. Western Connecticut hosts Stevens on Tuesday (6:00 p.m.) in a non-conference game.
