Southern Maine Wins Season Opener 2-0 Over SUNY-Maritime

            GORHAM, Maine -- Senior CC Pelletier (West Newfield, Maine/Massabesic) and sophomore Emma Dennison (South Portland, Maine) scored goals in the final 11 minutes to give the University of Southern Maine Huskies a 2-0 victory over the SUNY-Maritime Privateers in a non-conference match Saturday at Hannaford Field.

            The game was the season opener for the Huskies.  The Privateers drop to 1-1 on the season.

            Pelletier gave the Huskies the lead when she broke through in the 80th minute.  Maritime rookie goalkeeper Cammie Havens (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Borough) stopped Pelletier's initial point-blank range shot, but Pelletier was able to get to the rebound first and slotted the ball into the net for her fifth career goal.

            The Huskies got an insurance goal from Dennison to go up 2-0 in the 88th minute.  On a corner kick, Dennison came into the play from the backside to collect the loose ball and found the net from 12 yards out for her first career marker.

            Maritime's best opportunity came in the 83rd minute when it was award a free kick about 25 yards from goal.  Sophomore Gayle Woods' (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) long-range attempt was cleanly handled by USM senior goalkeeper Marissa Temple (Grafton, Mass.).

            Havens finished the match with 10 saves as the Huskies piled up a 19-4 edge in shots. Temple earned her fourth career shutout recording two saves.

            Southern Maine will host Bates College in its next match on Tuesday (4:30 p.m.).  SUNY-Maritime will play the University of Maine at Machias tomorrow afternoon (1:00 p.m.) at Hannaford Field.
