            WENHAM, Mass.  – Junior Emily Doherty (Shrewsbury, Mass./Worcester Academy) scored once in each half to lead the Worcester Polytechnic Institute Engineers to a 2-0 season-opening win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in the second game of the Gordon College Invitational Friday afternoon in Wenham, Mass.

            With both teams competing in their respective season-openers, Southern Maine begins its 2014 campaign at 0-1.  WPI starts at 1-0.

            Doherty put the Engineers on the board in the 42nd minute converting an assist from sophomore Emma Turton (Mechanic Falls, Maine/Poland Regional). Doherty made it 2-0 in the 62nd minute benefitting from an assist from sophomore Janine Fatal (Amesbury, Mass.).

            WPI held a distinct 27-4 advantage in shots.  Huskies' junior goalkeeper Marissa Temple (Grafton, Mass.) made 18 saves in the loss.  Engineer sophomore Abbey Teliska (LaGrangeville, N.Y./Arlington) made two saves to earn the shutout.

            Southern Maine returns to action Saturday (2:30 p.m.) against host Gordon College. Gordon College lost to UMaine Fort Kent 4-0 in the opener.  WPI will take on UMFK tomorrow at 12:00 p.m.
