Junior Amy Jose (#3) scored her first goal of the season in the Huskies' 3-0 season-opening win over Maritime (NY).

GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine women's soccer team got goals from three players and senior goalkeeper Katie Cobb (Lewiston, Maine) recorded five saves as the Huskies opened their 2013 season by blanking SUNY Maritime 3-0 in the first day of play in the USM Invitational Friday afternoon at Hannaford Field.

In the second game, Gordon College got two goals apiece from senior Kendra Woudenberg (Whitinsville, Mass.) and sophomore Jamie Breton (Concord, N.H.) en route to a 9-0 win over Thomas College.

Game One:

Southern Maine held the edge over Maritime before breaking through in the 17th minute when senior Jordan Grant (Concord, N.H.) picked up a loose ball in the box and fired a 15-yard shot past Maritime sophomore goalie Jori Cooper (Chazy, N.Y.) for her first career goal.  Grant played for the Huskies nationally-ranked basketball team the past two years, and is returning to the pitch this fall for the first time since high school.

Grant's goal would be the lone marker of the opening 45 minutes.  Cooper kept Maritime in the match making 10 saves in the first half.

The Huskies doubled their lead 11 minutes into the second half as sophomore CC Pelletier (West Newfield, Maine/Massabesic) slotted a through pass to junior Amy Jose (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) who beat Cooper from about 12 yards out.

Junior Kelly Burrell (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) closed the scoring in the 61st minute when she converted a penalty kick after being fouled in the box.

Cobb had a relatively quiet first half registering one stop.  She made four more saves in the second half to preserve her second career shutout.  Cooper finished the match with 13 saves.

Southern Maine had a 22-8 edge in shots attempted, including a 16-5 advantage in shots on goal, and a 6-1 margin in corner kicks.

Game Two:

Gordon exploded for four goals in the opening 14 minutes to take control of its match with Thomas.  Junior Hannah Midwinter (Barkhamsted, Conn.) gave the Fighting Scots the only goal they would need just 26 seconds into the match.  Breton added the first of her two goals less than three minutes later to make it 2-0.

Junior Olivia Balloveras (Freeport, N.Y.) tallied in the 10th minute off an assist from Midwinter, and Breton scored her second goal in the 14th minute.  That score held up through the remainder of the opening half.

Woudenberg scored twice in the first six minutes of the second half, as the Fighting Scots would tack on five more goals.  Midwinter picked up her second assist of the match on Woudenberg's second goal.

Three Gordon goalies combined for the shutout without recording a save.  Senior Kate Thibodeau (Woolwich, Maine) made nine saves in the Thomas net.

Thomas will meet Maritime (NY) on Saturday (2:00 p.m.) in Game Three of the tournament.  USM and Gordon will meet in Game Four (4:30 p.m.).
