Cobb and Radino Named USM Women's Soccer Captains

GORHAM, Maine -- Senior goalkeeper Katie Cobb (Lewiston, Maine) and senior back Cara Radino (Franklin, New Jersey/Wallkill Valley) have been named captains of the 2012 University of Southern Maine women's soccer team.  Head coach Lisa Petruccelli, entering her seventh season at the helm of the women's soccer program, made the announcement recently.

The Huskies will begin their 2012 season this Friday when they travel to Wenham, Mass., to take on Gordon College (7:00 p.m.).  The Huskies will then travel to Thomas College on Sunday (1:00 p.m.) before hosting Bowdoin College in their home opener on September 6 (4:30 p.m.).

Cobb and Radino are two of five seniors on a team that also features, two juniors, nine sophomores, and nine freshmen.  Cobb, who sat out the 2011 season with an injury, played in two games as a freshman in 2009 with eight saves and 2.56 goals against average.  She played in seven games in 2010 making 26 saves with a 3.02 goals against average and recording one win.

As a junior in 2011, Radino started all 17 games at back for the Huskies.  Radino played in 12 games during the 2010 season after transferring to USM from Minnesota State University Moorhead.

"(Cobb) and (Radino) are two people who understand what it's going to take to win and continue to try to help others on our path to get there.  Katie is very vocal.  She's a leader from both the back and the side, and has shown exceptional dedication to the program.  Cara leads by her actions and controls the backfield very well," Petruccelli said. "Their teammates know they've been working hard this summer to prepare for this year, and are coming into this season ready to work more."

After hosting Bowdoin, USM will play three consecutive road games against Framingham State University on September 8 (3:30 p.m.), the University of New England on September 11 (6:00 p.m.), and at Little East Conference foe Western Connecticut State University on September 15 (12:00 p.m.).

The Huskies host Salem State University on September 19 (4:00 p.m.) and Keene State College in its LEC home opener on September 22 (1:00 p.m.).  The Huskies will also host LEC matches against Plymouth State University on October 6 and Eastern Connecticut State University on October 20.

USM concluded the 2011 season 3-12-2 overall and 1-5-1 in conference play.
