GORHAM, Maine -- Senior forward Katie Caron (Winslow, Maine) scored a pair of goals as the University of New England Nor'easters rolled past the University of Southern Maine Huskies, 4-0, in a non-conference women's soccer match Tuesday afternoon at Hannaford Field.
The victory was the second straight for the Nor'easters, and extended their unbeaten streak to four games (3-0-1). The Nor'easters, who have not surrendered a goal during the past four matches, improved to 7-1-1 overall. The Huskies dropped their fourth straight to slip to 2-7-0.
UNE dominated on the score sheet, out shooting Southern Maine, 16-0, and earning seven corner kicks.
Junior Lauren Blaisdell (Scarborough, Maine) gave the Nor'easters an early lead when she found the net in the fourth minute of play. Senior Sarah Richardson (Rochester, N.H./Spaulding) converted an assist from junior Nicole Faircloth (Westfield, Mass.) in the 16th minute to double the Nor'easters' advantage. Caron's first goal in the 29th minute made it 3-0 before halftime.
Caron tallied the only goal of the second half by getting onto the end of a Faircloth pass in the 78th minute. Caron now has a team-leading six goals on the season.
Senior Jess Woodworth (Concord, N.H.) and freshman Sarah Papapietro (Bonita, Calif.) combined to post the clean sheet for UNE. Neither had to record a save. Senior Kat Rothe (Leeds, Maine/Leavitt Area) registered six stops for USM.
Southern Maine hosts the University of Massachusetts Boston on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) for a Little East Conference match. UNE entertains Nichols College in a Commonwealth Coast Conference match Saturday (3:00 p.m.).
