BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Senior Ellery Gould (East Sandwich, Mass.) scored a pair of goals to lead the Bowdoin College Polar Bears to a season-opening, 3-0 victory over the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference women's soccer match Thursday afternoon at Pickard Field.
The Polar Bears controlled the pace of the match before breaking through in the 27th minute as rookie Kaley Nelson (Vienna, Va.) booted home a rebound for her first collegiate goal. Gould doubled the advantage in the 42nd minute converting a feed from first-year Alexa Yurick (New York, N.Y.). The Polar Bears piled up a 19-2 margin in shots over the first 45 minutes.
Gould tallied the only marker of the second half heading home a cross from junior Casey Blossom (Concord, N.H.) in the 57th minute. The two goals pushed Gould's career total to 34, four shy of the school record.
Southern Maine senior goalkeeper Kat Rothe (Leeds, Maine) made 12 saves. Sophomore Louise Johnson (New York, N.Y.) registered three stops in the Bowdoin goal to record the clean sheet. Bowdoin finished the match with a huge 33-6 advantage in shots and a 9-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Huskies return to action on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) hosting Framingham State University in a non-conference match at Falmouth (Maine) High School. Bowdoin will open its NESCAC schedule on Saturday (12:00 p.m.) traveling to Wesleyan University.
