GORHAM, Maine  --  With the season-opening match less than a week away, University of Southern Maine women's soccer head coach Lisa Petruccelli announced this week that senior forward Heidi DeHaan (Lewiston, Maine/St. Dominic), senior defender Ashley LaRose (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) and senior forward Danielle Poulin (Readfield, Maine/Maranacook) have been named captains for the upcoming 2010 season.

This is the second season that LaRose has served as a captain, and the first time that DeHaan and Poulin will wear the captain's armband.  DeHaan and Poulin are entering their fourth season with program.  LaRose is in her third season since transferring to USM in 2008.  The three are among the 26 players, including 12 returnees, on this season's roster.

"(DeHaan, LaRose and Poulin) are committed student-athletes on the field and in the classroom," commented Petruccelli, now in her fifth season at USM.  "They train very hard and lead by example on the field.  In the classroom, they are outstanding students who provide a great resource to our younger players.  Together, they provide us with some excellent leadership and valuable experience."

An All-Little East Conference second team selection last year, DeHaan has led the Huskies in scoring the past two seasons.  She had seven goals, including three game-winning markers, and two assists for 16 points last season.  In 2008, DeHaan found the net five times for 10 points.  On two occasions last season she was named the LEC Offensive Player of the Week.  In 53 career matches, including 38 starts, DeHaan has 12 goals and four assists for 28 points.

Poulin netted two goals last season, and has four goals and one assist in 51 career matches.  LaRose has started all 36 matches over the past two seasons and spearheads the Huskies' back line.

The Huskies open their 19-game 2010 schedule on September 1 (4:00 p.m.) hosting Husson University.  The Huskies open their Little East Conference schedule September 18 (1:00 p.m.) at the University of Massachusetts Boston.
