GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore Cathy Wise (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cheverus) scored twice in the opening half as the University of Southern Maine women's soccer team scored the first six goals of the match en route to an 8-2 victory over visiting SUNY Maritime College Sunday afternoon at the USM Soccer Field.

The win was the first of the season for the Huskies (1-2-0) after two losses.  The Privateers (0-3-0) dropped their third straight game.

Wise found the net twice in the opening 12 minutes to stake the Huskies to an early 2-0 lead.  She slotted home an eight-yard shot after receiving a cross from senior Heidi DeHaan (Lewiston, Maine/St. Dominic) in the fifth minute, and later would play the ball around Maritime junior goalkeeper Ashley Eddington (Bayshore, N.Y./St. Anthony's) for a 10-yard shot into the unguarded net in the 12th minute.

Junior Tara Moore (Portland, Maine/Deering) made it 3-0 in the 22nd minute knocking home a loose ball, then set up freshman Laura Hayward (Woolwich, Maine/Morse) in the 23rd minute.  Sophomore Katie Grenier (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) increased the lead to 5-0 before halftime, converting a right wing cross from sophomore Stefanie Stockwell (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle).

After sophomore Jen Baril (Mechanic Falls, Maine/Poland Regional) made it 6-0 in the 53rd minute, Maritime sophomore Jorrie Trenkamp (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) scored the first of her two goals in the 61st minute with an 18-yard shot into the right side of the goal.

Freshman Emily Kozma (Pittston, Maine/Gardiner Area) countered for USM with an unassisted goal in the 65th minute.  Four minutes later, Trenkamp finished off a brilliant, 60-yard solo run through the Huskies' defense with a 15-yard shot.  USM sophomore Jess Gassman (Kennebunk, Maine) tallied the final goal of the match converting a penalty kick in the 81st minute.

Southern Maine rolled up a 32-4 advantage in shots, while Maritime had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.  Eddington finished the match with nine saves.  USM junior goalie Kat Rothe (Leeds, Maine/Leavitt Area) recorded two saves.

The Huskies are back in action Wednesday evening (7:00 p.m.) when they play at the University of New England.  Maritime will travel to Morristown, N.J., on Tuesday (3:00 p.m.) to play the College of St. Elizabeth.
