Southern Maine Downs Rhode Island College 15-8

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Paced by senior Rosie Forster's (Andover, Mass.) five goals, the University of Southern Maine Huskies finished the 2014 regular season with a 15-8 victory over the Rhode Island College Anchorwomen in a Little East Conference game Sunday afternoon at the RIC Lacrosse Field.
The win was the second in two days for the Huskies and secured the fourth seed in the upcoming Little East Conference Women's Lacrosse Tournament. The Huskies will host fifth-seeded Eastern Connecticut State University on Tuesday at a time to be determined. USM finished the regular season at 7-8 overall and 3-3 in the conference.
The Anchorwomen dropped their second straight to finish the campaign 7-7 overall and 1-5 in LEC play. The Anchorwomen received the sixth and final berth in the postseason tournament and will play at third-seeded Plymouth State University on Tuesday.
Senior Jacki Kelly (Brunswick, Maine) finished the game with four goals to complement Forster. Rookie Lauren Lessard (Lewiston, Maine) chipped in two goals, and senior Shelby Turcotte (Lewiston, Maine) and junior Laura Fay (Falmouth, Maine) each had a goal and an assist. Senior Jessalyn O'Neill (North Providence, R.I.) led the Anchorwomen with four points on two goals and two assists. Junior Jessica Ricci (Hope, R.I.) had three goals, and classmate Danielle Landon (Wading River, N.Y.) contributed two markers.
USM senior goalkeeper Kim Vogel (Sanford, Maine) made six saves to earn the win (7-8). RIC senior goalie Taryn Carbone (Cranston, R.I.) made 16 saves in the loss (6-7).
Forster and Kelly staked the Huskies to a 2-0 lead in the first five minutes of the opening half, before Landon tallied with 22:15 left. The Huskies rattled off four straight, as Lessard, Forster, Kelly and junior attacker Nicole LaPlante (South Portland, Maine) each scored, to build a 6-1 advantage with 10 minutes left in the stanza. Forster and Kelly scored to make 8-2, but back-to-back strikes from Landon and O'Neill pulled RIC within four with just under two minutes remaining.
Fay and Turcotte scored in the final minute of the half to give USM a 10-4 lead at halftime.
After Ricci scored 1:08 into the second half, the tandem of Forster and Kelly scored to the Huskies a commanding 12-5 advantage. Sophomore Shauna Robert (Lyman, Maine) scored with three minutes left in the game to give USM a 15-6 advantage. O'Neill and senior attacker Ashley Appel (Foxboro, MA) tallied in the final minutes for the Anchorwomen.
The Huskies held the advantage in shots, 41-20, ground balls, 32-30, and draw controls, 14-11. Foster picked up five ground balls and caused five RIC turnovers while Kelly scooped up five ground balls and caused three RIC miscues. Freshman Heather Everett (Waterboro, Maine) also had five ground balls for the Huskies.
Junior Harmony Tillison (Cranston, R.I.) and senior Sam Nolte (Cranston, R.I.) had a game-high six ground balls apiece for the Anchorwomen. Nolte also had five caused turnovers.
