GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman Anh Nguyen (South Portland, Maine) snapped a 10-10 tie with her only goal of the game coming with 7:39 to play and the University of Southern Maine Huskies went on to defeat the Castleton State College Spartans 12-10 in non-conference women's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.

The win was the fourth straight for the undefeated Huskies, and snapped a string of four straight losses to the Spartans.  The winless Spartans dropped their fourth straight decision.

Nguyen weaved her way through the Spartan defense and beat rookie goalie Meghan Els (Commack, N.Y.) for her sixth goal of the season.  Junior Jacki Kelly (Brunswick, Maine) would tack on an insurance marker just over four minutes later to secure the victory.

Kelly led all scorers with five goals and one assist for six points.  Senior Samantha Purcell (Durham, Maine/Lisbon) tallied two goals and had one assist, and junior Rosie Forster (Andover, Mass.) picked up two goals and had seven draw controls.

Junior Jennilee Mark (Chelmsford, Mass.) led the Spartan attack with three goals.  She also scooped up a game-high seven ground balls and had three draw controls.  Classmate Sarah Clark (Guilford, Vt.) had two goals and one assist.  Els finished the match registering 14 saves.

The game was back-and-forth throughout.  Castleton tallied three goals in a span of two minutes to take a 3-1 lead.  Southern Maine, sparked by two goals from Kelly, struck back with four straight goals to assume a 5-3 advantage.  Mark and Kelly traded goals 41 second apart to make it 6-4.  Mark beat Vogel in the final minute of the half to leave the Huskies with a one-goal edge at the break.

Southern Maine controlled the opening five minutes of the second half to expand its lead to 9-5.  Junior Jenna Cyr (Limerick, Maine/Massabesic), Purcell and Forster tallied goals to give USM its biggest lead of the game.

Sophomore Kate Auer (South Glen Falls, N.Y.) converted a free-position attempt to spark a run of four straight Spartan goals in less than four minutes of play to tie the score at 9-9.  Junior Amanda Flodstrom (Stratham, N.H.), and seniors Samantha Bonasera (Chelsea, Vt.) and Jessica Taplin (Barre, Vt.) had the other goals.

Rookie Sarah Pelligrinelli (Southington, Conn.) restore the lead to the Huskies with 12:41 to play, but Clark equalized for the Spartans just 38 seconds later.  After more than four minutes of scoreless play, Nguyen potted what proved to be the game-winning score.
