USM Senior Emily Nicholson Earns Honor Roll Mention
GORHAM, Maine – Freshman guard Kristen Curley (Gorham, Maine) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies' women's basketball team has been named Maine Women's Basketball Coaches' Association (MWBCA) Rookie of the Week for the fifth time this season. Recently named the Little East Conference Rookie of the Week for the second consecutive week, the Huskies' 5-9 guard has earned numerous weekly accolades from the MWBCA, New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) and LEC in her debut intercollegiate season.
Joining Curley, Southern Maine senior guard Emily Nicholson (Quispamsis, New Brunswick/Kennebecasis) earned a spot on the MWBCA Weekly honor roll for the third time this season. Nominated for Player of the Week honors, Nicholson averaged 19 points per game, scoring a career-high 22 points at Husson. Nicholson drained nine three-pointers over the course of two games, shooting a solid 9-for-17 from long range. She added 5.0 rebounds, and 2.0 steals per game during the week.
Collecting her fifth honor from the MWBCA, Curley averaged 19.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 4.5 steals per game for the Huskies, while shooting 48.1 (13-for-27) from the field over two games. Shooting 5-for-12 from the field and 8-for-9 from the free throw line, Curley was USM's second leading scoring in a non-conference game at Husson University, totaling 19 points, four rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot. At LEC opponent UMass Dartmouth, Curley led Southern Maine in scoring with 19 points, four rebounds and a career-best nine steals, while shooting an outstanding 8-for-15 from the floor. Curley's nine steals inserted her in to the Huskies' single-game record books and is tied for third in Husky records with three-time All-Little East Conference defensive team honoree Renee Nicholas '12. Nicholas owns the Huskies' record of 13 against UMass Boston (1/26/2010).
Curley leads the Huskies in scoring averaging 16.9 points per game and is shooting an outstanding 55.8 percent (86-for-154) from the field, and 41.7 percent from three-point range (20-for-48). The 5-9 guard is averaging 4.8 rebounds, 2.5 steals, 1.3 assists and 1.2 blocked shots per game. Curley is seventh in the Little East in scoring average, second in field goal percentage and third in three-point field goal percentage. She is second in both steals (32) and blocked shots (15), and is third in total points (220).
A five-time MWBCA Rookie of the Week, (Jan. 9, Jan. 3, Dec. 12, Dec. 5, and Nov. 28), and two-time LEC weekly honoree (Jan. 8, Jan. 2), Curley earned her back-to-back NEWBA Rookie of the Week honors on January 2 and December 11. With her fifth MWBCA weekly honor, joins former Husky standouts Erin McNamara (2010-2014), Curran Leighton (2009-10), and Tiffany Jones (2002-2005) to earn the honor multiple times throughout the season. All three, McNamara, Leighton and Jones, went on to earn MWBCA post-season honors. Leighton earned the honor eight times in her rookie season, while Jones earned weekly rookie honors four times and player of the week honors twice, while McNamara earned the accolade three-times.
Southern Maine hosts Rhode Island College in a Little East Conference game on Wednesday (5:30 p.m.).
